Hey everyone! I am reading a fabulous book that is sooooo hard to put down. It is called Miss Spitfire: Reaching Helen Keller. Now, I will tell you all about it.
To begin, I'll share some astonishing facts that I learned from the book. The first is that Annie Sullivan was blind! (Only for the beginning of her life. She was healed a few years before she went down south to teach Helen Keller.) Another surprising thing is that Helen's parents thought she was hopeless. They only hired a teacher out of desperation because they didn't know what else to do. Last, is that many people, including Annie, considered Helen the "cleverest person in her entire family". Surprising, don't you think?
I don't know about you, but I've always had the impression that Helen Keller was taught quickly and easily. This is not so. After her first weeks there, Annie thought that speaking and connecting to Helen was impossible. She couldn't stand Helen, and was known to call her some nasty names such as a "wretched beast". She even came close to leaving for good! Did you know that?
Third, I'll talk about a text-to-text connection between Helen and a character named Sara in the story, A Little Princess. Both of them had to overcome obstacles in their life. As you most likely know, Helen's was being deaf and blind. She was helped to overcome this by Annie Sullivan teaching her to learn and communicate with other people. Sara was faced with the death of her beloved father which in turn left her as a penniless orphan. She was assisted in her plight by an Indian gentleman who was a family friend. He gave her a home and made her a heiress to a large fortune. Isn't that wonderful?
I'm so glad to be finished with the first part of this book! I'm sure that the second half will be just as good. If this post interested you, then read this stupendous book!
